NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Saying he was going to ask more of the wealthy, Mayor Bill de Blasio was sworn in as New York's 109th mayor.

De Blasio succeeds Mike Bloomberg, who served three four-year terms, covering the period of New York's recovery from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The new mayor is the first Democrat to lead the city in 20 years. David Dinkins, the last Democrat to be mayor, was on the platform for the ceremonial swearing-in at City Hall at midday. De Blasio was officially sworn-in by State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman just after midnight in front of his Brooklyn home.

In the City Hall ceremony, President Bill Clinton administered the oath of office as de Blasio's family, Bloomberg, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton looked on. Then the new mayor laid out his plans for the city, including his desire to bridge the gap between the wealthy and the poor, in his inaugural address.

But because SPH is more involved in the retail end of propane instead of the production/logistical side, it has been significantly outperformed by NGL Energy Partners (NYSE: NGL) and Ferrellgas Partners (NYSE: FGP). In short, the latter two are the ways to play higher propane prices, whereas SPH will see much less benefit from higher-priced propane.

For years, investors turned to lesser-known telecom companies for high dividend yields. Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN  ) and Frontier Communications (NASDAQ: FTR  ) became especially popular, as they focused on rural areas where consumers have fewer choices on where to get telecom services. Even though those businesses have been in slow decline, both Frontier and Windstream have made efforts to broaden their offerings to keep up with competition in broadband Internet and business services, with varying degrees of success. Windstream has managed to keep its dividend steady, but Frontier had to cut its dividend twice in recent years, sending its shares down substantially.

Advisors' Opinion:

Margins matter. The more Ignite Restaurant Group (Nasdaq: IRG  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Ignite Restaurant Group's competitive position could be.

Top 5 High Tech Companies To Buy Right Now

Target CFO John Mulligan appeared before a U.S. Senate committee this morning to express that the retail giant was "deeply sorry" for losing 110 million customer records to hackers.

"We will learn from this incident and, as a result, we hope to make Target, and our industry, more secure for customers in the future," he said.

Mulligan is right about lessons to be learned. And let's hope that these public disclosures of the scale of daily cybercrime will help to accelerate tougher industry security rules, perhaps backed by new consumer protection laws.

RadioShack (RSH) has done enough to take the electronics industry to a new level with various turnarounds in its history. But it is struggling to remain competitive in the market as it has lost nearly 85% of its value since the beginning of 2010.

  • [By Philip Springer]

What’s this week’s big story for investors?

Candidate #1: RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) said it will close up to 1,100 of its nearly 5,200 US stores amid widening losses. The company also announced that revenue in the fourth quarter of 2013 fell 20 percent from year-earlier levels.

It doesn’t matter whether the latest announcement is in addition to or merely an expansion of the company’s Feb. 5 statement that it would close 500 stores. That, in turn, shortly followed the beleaguered company’s $4 million expenditure for a widely praised but clearly ill-timed 30-second ad during the Super Bowl.

Also this week, Radio Shack agreed to pay its top executives “retention” bonuses, saying their skills are critical to the company comeback plan. CEO Joe Magnacca will get a $500,000 payment, while other executives will receive $187,500 to $275,000.

The stock currently trades around $2, down from its 1999 peak of $61.

No, that’s not the week’s big story. But it was too good to ignore.

Candidate #2: The current bull market celebrates its fifth birthday this week, with the Standard & Poor’s 500 delivering a total return of about 175 percent during that time.

Since 1921, the median bull market has been 50 months long and has delivered 115 percent in price appreciation. So this market is older and better than most. Still, the conditions aren’t yet present to suggest the end is near. Indeed, Wednesday’s advance, the best of the year to date, was exceptional for both its breadth and heavy volume.

The five-year anniversary also means that stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds and so on will boast very good five-year returns. Don’t be overly impressed. Reason: Almost everybody will be a winner. (Other than Radio Shack.) But you should dig deeper: Comparisons will be useful to sort out leaders and laggards for potential investme

AP, John Amis Walmart is once again undercutting Apple (AAPL) on its own phone, slashing the price of the new iPhone 5c to $45 -- less than half the $99 suggested retail price. The iPhone 5s and 5c came out on Sept. 20, and at the time Walmart (WMT) surprised everyone by selling the phones at below-market prices of $189 and $79, respectively. Now, just two weeks after that launch, the price on the downmarket 5c is coming down even more. The move appears to come in response to rival Best Buy (BBY), which on Thursday announced that it was taking the price of the phone down to $50. In a statement, Walmart spokesperson Sarah McKinney said that "providing our customers low prices on the newest technology is what we do." She did, however, acknowledge Best Buy's own price cut, and said that "As a price leader, we are always looking for ways to surprise our customers with low prices and disrupt the competition." Besides beating Best Buy's price by $5, Walmart has another advantage: Its pricing is good at least through the end of the holiday season, while Best Buy's pricing is only good through Oct. 7. Walmart also has an active trade-in program that lets you apply the value of your old phone to your purchase. Walmart isn't the only retailer responding to Best Buy's big price cut: RadioShack (RSH) also announced Friday that it will discount the phone to $50, a price that will be good through Nov. 2. Still, with so many retailers suddenly discounting the 5c, we wouldn't be surprised if it became the standard pricing for the phone going forward. Regardless, one thing is clear: For now, the Apple Store is not the best place to buy this iPhone. Stop texting and start saving! Yes, your smartphone can save you money – from coupons to comparing prices to making a shopping list, these seven smartphone apps are the key to making sure you don’t go over your budget. 22 Tips to Transform Your Financial Life After a Divorce

Top Semiconductor Companies To Invest In 2015

As a divorce financial adviser, I'm often brought in to work with clients who are still going through a split, but I'm just as often brought in afterward. Newly single clients are typically concerned about their finances and want to make sure they have enough for their immediate needs, and that they'll have enough when they retire. Even my very wealthy clients -– those with millions of dollars after a divorce –- have the same nagging questions and fears keeping them up at night. To help them, I've developed this divorce financial checklist. Considering that many divorce proceedings last a year or longer, once the marital settlement agreement is reached, you may want to take a long break from paperwork, lawyers or even thinking about your finances. That's a normal reaction. But resist it: There are some things you need to examine soon to make sure you're protected and on the right track financially. So go through this checklist to be sure nothing has slipped through the cracks. Once you're done, you'll have financial peace of mind -- and you'll be able to sleep like a baby.

Hot Defensive Companies To Buy Right Now

As it turns out, the most recent Great (Sector) Rotation was short-lived and perhaps not so great after all. Although defensive sectors are back to outperforming cyclical sectors amid June market volatility, I still believe there's a strong case for preferring cyclicals over defensives, or at least select cyclicals.

There are three reasons to consider investing in cyclical sectors now:

1. Attractive Valuations. Defensive sectors continue to look overpriced. Investors searching for safety and yield have driven up the valuations of defensive companies. The three classic defensive sectors -- healthcare, staples, and utilities -- are now trading at an average premium of around 20% to the broader market. By way of comparison, back in the fall of 2009 these three sectors were trading at an average discount of around 40% to the broader market. Current premiums seem unjustified considering that profitability is somewhat lower for companies in the defensive space.

Advisors' Opinion:

Like Universal Display, InvenSense (INVN) represents a good long-term opportunity in its own right. The price entry point is not quite as good, though it has pulled back under my more recent price target of $15, when reports of a long-awaited Apple design win were challenged. Though conversations between the two are ongoing, InvenSense management's comments indicate an unwillingness to get roped into wrecking margin for volume, like many other Apple suppliers. Consequently, I don't believe they will gain Apple as a customer until the release of an iWatch or similar device that absolutely requires InvenSense's best-in-class form factors and power usage. It's also possible that continued good news on their legal battles with ST Micro (STM) could move the stock.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Is Europe back?
Certainly, some of the enthusiasm about Europe has to do with the stabilization of economic prospects throughout the region. Germany, France, and Spain are still reporting sluggish GDP numbers, but some early signs suggest that the recession could already have hit bottom in many countries in Europe. Perhaps more importantly, just the fact that conditions on the continent haven't gotten markedly worse has seemed to bolster investor confidence. In particular, Spain's recovery has given investors in Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) new hope that efforts to keep its telecom business strong not just in Europe but in Latin America as well could bear fruit.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Working with incomplete information is something markets are used to, though, despite the volatility that it can produce. AT&T (NYSE: T  ) posted minimal gains after Spain's Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) denied rumors that AT&T was looking to buy out the European telecom giant. With its already massive position in the U.S. wireless market, AT&T will have to look abroad for substantial growth opportunities. With Telefonica having chosen to cut its dividend temporarily in order to reallocate capital, a buyout might have been good news for its shareholders; Telefonica stock is up 3.5% despite its denial. Still, given the amount of money involved -- $93 billion, according to one report -- it would take a massive commitment to get the deal done.
