Advisors' Opinion:

In the world of publicly-owned businesses, we try to invest with the same sort of individuals. In our opinion, Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's Chairman and CEO, is one such example of a talented, driven executive. Michael was born on a farm in Ireland, the second oldest of six siblings. Although his beginnings were not remarkable, Michael figured out how to get the best education he could by attending the best schools he could. After attending a Jesuit boarding school as a young boy, he graduated from Trinity College with an accounting degree; began his career working for KPMG, a large public accounting firm; and, soon afterwards, became a financial advisor to Tony Ryan, Ryanair's founder. In 1986, Michael was hired to work for Ryan and initially advised him to close the airline immediately since it was losing so much money! In 1989, when Ryanair (RYAAY) was on the brink of insolvency, Ryan offered Michael the job of Deputy CEO of the airline and in 1994 as its CEO. Michael accepted, on the condition that if he couldn't make it profitable, he would be allowed to shut it down! He also chose to work for a percentage of profits rather than for a salary from the money losing business.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] Hewlett-Packard and Value Line?

Well, Value Line is obviously too small an investment for Buffett. But wee using it as a stand in for all the publishers Buffett once loved but now shuns.

Buffett is a return on investment investor. He isn exactly a growth investor or a value investor if by growth we mean total revenue growth and if by value we mean the company value as of today.

Buffett wants to compound his money at the fastest rate possible. So he looks at how much of the company sales, assets, etc. he is getting. Basically, he looks at a price ratio. And then he looks into the company return on its own sales, assets, etc. When you take those two numbers together you get something very close to a rate of return.

The last part you need to consider is the change in assets versus the change in sales (and earnings). Does the company need to grow assets faster than earnings?

Or like See Candy can it grow sales a little faster than assets?

Let take a look at Norfolk Southern as a good example of the kind of railroad Buffett would own if he didn own all of Burlington Northern.

    Norfolk Southern

10-Year Average Return on Assets: 4.9%

    10-Year Annual Sales Growth: 6.0%

    10-Year Annual Asset Growth: 3.6%

Now, how much earning power do you get when you invest in Norfolk Southern?

Total Assets are $28.54 billion. And the market cap is $21.28 billion. So, $28.54 billion / $21.28 billion = $1.34 in assets for every $1 you pay for the stock today.

Now, Norfolk Southern return on assets has averaged a little less than 5% over the last decade. But I think that like he does with IBM Buffett believes the current returns on assets of the railroads are sustainable. So, we are talking something in the 5% to 7% range for a railroad like Norfolk Southern.

On top of this, he sees that the railroads have grown sales faster than assets. Now, we could do

Top Transportation Companies To Watch In Right Now: EQT Midstream Partners LP (EQM)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Unfortunately for XTO Energy, there was one small and, unbeknownst to anyone, unresolved matter. You see, LINN had a contract to sell its gas through a unit of Dominion Resources (NYSE: D  ) , which was gathering the gas in its system. However, LINN's gas wasn't up to the system's standards, so it began to look for another gatherer and it approached Equitrans, which is now part of EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQM  ) but formerly was a unit of EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT  ) -- they talked, but nothing was signed. However, an EQT employee later that year thought that it had and began crediting gas to the wrong company.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Goldman Sachs analysts started coverage on EQT Midstream Partners LP (EQM) early on Monday, giving the oil and natural gas distribution company a bullish rating due to its low-risk cash flows.

The analysts rate EQM as “Buy” and see shares reaching $59. This price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $48.28.

Goldman Sachs analyst Theodore Durbin said, “EQM’s FERCregulated pipeline and storage assets offer stable, low-risk fee-based cash flows supported by firm long-term contracts. A robust production outlook in the Marcellus and meaningful inventory of dropdown assets at the parent enhances distribution growth visibility. EQM has a low cost of capital, no debt outstanding, high liquidity and an aligned sponsor that should bolster the partnership multi-year double-digit distribution growth outlook.”

EQT Midstream Partners shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 54.99% year-to-date.

  • [By Lee Jackson]

EQT Midstream Partners L.P. (NYSE: EQM) has everything the Oppenheimer team is looking for: low-risk, fee-based contracts in an attractive region, low financial leverage, high distribution growth and coverage and a supportive parent with assets to sell. Oppenheimer has a $55 price target for the stock. The Thomson/First Call estimate is at $54. Investors are paid a 3.4% distribution which Oppenheimer thinks may grow to 4.3% in 2014. Remember, MLP distributions may include return of principal.
